Needless to say - I have heard many purity and modesty talks in my time. I have heard a few that were done well but unfortunately, the ones that I remember are the ones that were harmful to me as a young girl and to the guys around me. The conversations about dating, purity, and modesty were often handled poorly by mainstream Christian media.
It was as if a new slab of meat came off the grill every 15 minutes and we ate food nonstop from 3 pm to 5 pm. There had to be at least 6 different cakes for us, which we ate alongside our professors and the Spanish students. Our professor told us to come to the asado at noon, so we did.
It seemed honorable to not even look at a guy's physical appearance and to denounce that aspect of attraction and only count looking at personality and sense of humor as valid. I could go into so much more about how not to do a modesty talk, so let me end by saying how to do one well. At Odyssey, we're on a mission to encourage constructive discourse on the Internet. We ate very slowly and, again, we were reminded of the very relaxed, slow-paced lifestyle in Argentina.
College only gets busier the more the years go on, which means less free time. Freshman year you went to lunch, dinner, the gym, class, events, and everything else possible together. You had the chance to be each other's go-to before it got tough. There was so much time to bond before the stresses of college would later take over.
How we forgot about the laid-back South American culture, I don’t know, but we were there before anyone else. Our professor arrived at 2 pm, and slowly we started cooking the meat and eating around 3 pm. A student brought his keyboard and serenaded us, and we chatted with the students, in both English and Spanish, while eating more slabs of meat than one can imagine. An asado is exactly that, along with vegetables, pasta salads, and bread. It is sad to look back and realize everything that has changed since your freshman year days.
While dating is linked to marriage, this does so wrongly. Marriage is not a lifestyle that everyone is called to and it should not be lorded over youths as it is when having these discussions. We also have a free lunch period on Tuesdays and use our time to explore some of Mendoza’s best restaurants. I am hoping to come back to the States knowing how to cook empanadas and bake chocotortas with dulce-de-leche, a cake that I would die for, and I don’t even like chocolate cakes. Known for its Malbec, Argentina has also allowed me to fall in love with its wineries and now I have a new appreciation for red wines.
It is no secret that transitioning from high school to college is difficult. No matter how excited you were to get away from home, reality hit at some point. Although some people are better at adjusting than others, at the times when you were not, your roommate was there to listen. You helped each other out, and made it through together.
