It still sports the tiled interface which has been depreciated somewhat in Windows 11 itself, although it makes far more sense on the Xbox dashboard in my view, which is primarily access via controller navigation.

I’d like to see Microsoft go much further on the Xbox Home screen and offer up the type of customization and simplicity we see elsewhere.

This new Xbox Home UI is still in early testing, so I assume this will return, but right now, it feels like a giant ad without that customization. The Xbox dashboard in recent years has become something of a source of controversy, with users denigrating the abundance of algorithmic content, while requesting refinements to features like the Xbox Game DVR and so on. Today, we're getting signs of renewed investment in the Xbox dashboard, with a call to action from Microsoft for feedback on some major changes to the experience. Microsoft also says that you'll see "curated categories and recommendations tailored to your gaming preferences" when you scroll down the page. The new “Jump back in” row gives you quick access to your most recently played games and apps. Microsoft is testing a brand-new Xbox home screen that will roll out to all Xbox consoles in 2023.
Ready to play when you are
The new Xbox dashboard is designed to be familiar, responsive, and inviting for all gamers, so you can spend more time playing and less time waiting. Regardless, this renewed focus on soliciting feedback from users on the dashboard is a positive sign for the Xbox platform, and we'll be sure to keep informing you of how the updates are progressing in the coming weeks and months ahead. Warren noted that the biggest change is what you'll find as you scroll down, showing a whole row dedicated to games that have recently been added to Game Pass, which he says is, "essentially an ad slot for Xbox Game Pass to show off the catalog." By periodically refreshing your Xbox Home screen, you can ensure that your user interface and layout are running as intended and maintained. However, periodically refreshing your Home screen, even if you aren't experiencing any issues, can help maintain your Xbox's user interface.

There are plenty of Xbox fans that have mocked up potential home screen interfaces over the years, and many show a clear desire for a home screen that puts more focus on your own pinned apps or games and the background wallpaper. The next row you'll find my games and apps, Microsoft Store, and Achievements shortcuts, as well as a couple of ad slots, in this video one being a "coming to Game Pass" slot, and the other an ad for Mount & Blade 2. The video, from The Verge's Tom Warren, shows what you can expect to see when you boot up your Xbox console whenever this update arrives in 2023.

It would be nice for Xbox to surface other types of gameplay progression too, given that some gamers prefer to stick with a single title over long periods of time. Microsoft previously explored revamping the Xbox achievement system with an Xbox "career" system as it came to be known, but it was unfortunately scrapped before implementation. In what Microsoft is calling the "New Xbox Home Experience," Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip Ahead ring will begin seeing aspects of the new dashboard very soon. This includes a refined home screen with quick visual access to important features like the settings menu, while surfacing more of your recent content directly on-screen.
Microsoft has also been adding plenty of features to its Xbox dashboard over the past year, with some impressive additions like Discord integration, a night mode, and even a 4K dashboard. Xbox has had a number of iconic home screens dating back to the original Xbox, but things really made an impact with the Blades dashboard on Xbox 360 and all of the subsequent evolutions that followed. All of the Xbox consoles have launched with new, premium, flashy home screens with the exception of the Xbox Series X, it's virtually identical to the Xbox One's current home screen. Starting this week, a random subset of Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring will see some layout, design, and ease of access changes as we experiment with different approaches.
Up at the top of the homepage, things aren't that different, though the six most recent games you've played or apps you've used are all the same size now, rather than the most recent being the largest. We know the Xbox homepage is where our gamers spend a lot of their time, and it’s a space that’s very personal. We also know we can always be listening and learning how we can do better here while keeping your experience fast and familiar.
With your input, we’re looking forward to launching this new, better Home experience in 2023. Please share your feedback and be patient as we add, remove, and change features to optimize the experience. The new dashboard design is part of what Microsoft describes as a "multi-year" experiment with new features and refinements, and wants Xbox users along for the ride. We've asked Microsoft if the Xbox Game DVR capture features or achievements system may be on the docket for improvements or revamps as part of this renewed spate of development, but we haven't heard back just yet. Microsoft isn’t planning to roll this new Xbox Home UI out until 2023, so there are many months ahead of testing, and I’m sure plenty of tweaks and changes, too.

Microsoft will utilize feedback from these Insiders over the next few months to help create a new Xbox home screen sometime in 2023. Although Xbox has released an image of what will be rolling out soon, it's unclear if the final product in 2023 will look like that or have any drastic changes. Xbox has announced it is giving users a new home screen and making various changes to the UI. It sets the tone for the feeling and aesthetic the console is going to offer, it is key to quickly and efficiently deliver information and making things like games, movies, and other apps easily accessible.

Microsoft also plans to curate content below the main screen from Xbox Game Pass, using your playstyle preferences to help you find new games. I think this is fine as a default for new Xbox users, but the biggest issue is you can’t customize this interface anymore. On the current Xbox dashboard, it’s easy to hit a button or dig into the settings and re-arrange sections, remove them altogether, and prioritize your own pinned apps.
